My current hobby at the moment is reading. My hobby is always changing over time. I used to collect DVDs of animated movies in the elementary school. Then on the 6th grade, I collected manga. On the 9th grade, I collected mini pc games. That kind of lame game which got either 'Dash' or 'Rush' on its title. On the 10th grade, I collected a numerous amount of Rubik's cube and its variation until 11th grade. On 12th grade, I collected some of the American TV show. And since the second semester of my freshmen year on college, I started this new hobby. Reading. And not just any book, English Novels (*you see, my native language is Indonesian). I'm not even sure how I can end up with this hobby, but here's how :
On my freshmen year of high school, I have this huge obsession toward this American TV show named Glee. I've watched all the episodes from season 1 until the latest episode at the moment. I heard that someone is going to make a novel which based on my favorite TV show, so yeah, I definitely going to buy it. And because I'm being so pretentious, I decided to get the English version of it. Glee: The Beginning is the first English novel that I bought. I thought I had enough vocabulary to read an English novel, but I was really really wrong. I need to go back and forth between the book and the dictionary at times when I encountered some English words that I never heard before. Nevertheless, I manage to finish the book. It was the first ever novel that I finished reading. Then the year after, I bought the sequel of that novel. For some reason, I didn't finish reading that book .__.
On my senior year of high school, my friends and I are obsessed with this website, 9GAG. We basically spent a copious amount of time browsing that site at home and then discussing all the images that we found funny at school. One day, I stumbled upon this post about a peculiar book, House of Leaves. The images itself has made me interested enough with the book, then I read the comment section. There's this comment from someone who had read the book and he said, "The book uses different fonts, lay out, size of the text, mirrored text and sometimes different languages all according to the story. For example, if the person enters a very small hallway, the text becomes very narrow, different storyline all continue spread out through the book. If you read this, you will often find yourself turning the book upside down, using a mirror to read things, constantly go back and forth to look up things. You will indeed get weird looks if you read this in public...".
I have to buy this book!!! And later, I find out that the book store where I bought my first English novel ever have an online store. So I start looking for that book, and yes! They sell that book! Long story short, I bought the book. It cost me IDR 232.000 and a month of waiting, but it was worth it. (*I even finished the book that I mentioned earlier to warm up before reading that book.). The book is MASSIVE. It's 709 pages long. It took me a week to finish that book with my limited vocabulary. It's the most treasured book in my collection until now xD
After I finish the book, I want to read more books! House of leaves just sparked my book addiction. And I always have this idea of owning the whole Harry Potter Series for a long time but I never thought that I can make that happen. (*and yeah, I know that the books has been turned into several movies. But still, they said that the book is better than the movie. I just want to confirm that statement.). After some mild consideration, I think to myself, "I think I can afford it.". So yeah, I'm starting to collect books xD
I've bought (*and read) Harry Potter series, The Hunger Games Trilogy, John Green book's, Divergent Trilogy, The Maze Runner, and several stand alone books so far. I hope this hobby will last for quite a long time. Who knows that reading books can be a fun activity? xD
